“Okay, it’s been five and a half hours and I never thought I’d say this, but I am bored. You’ve officially ruined winning for me,” Cadee said standing up and letting the blood rush back to her legs and butt.
Ganne leaned back and used his index finger and thumb to twist the glass. “You’re welcome.”
“Hmph.”
The side of his lip quirked, something he did more often as the hours ticked by.
“You don’t have to look so happy about it.”
“Would you stop playing if you didn’t enjoy it?”
She pursed her lips to think about it. “Probably not. I can make in a night what some people make in a month.”
Ganne sat forward as if he was going to say something so she waited. His voice was steady, and somehow silky smooth when he said, “How about another deal… one game, play for real, and the winner gets to ask anything they want, and the loser has to answer.”
“What exactly do you want to know?” she asked because that would determine if she played.
Ganne shrugged. “Dunno, you’d have to play.”
Not sitting down, she said, “The deal is…”
He cut her off, “I arranged the game rules, I decide on the deal. The deal is you play to find out the question.”
She tapped the box of cards against her thigh contemplating how Ganne would feel when she won, and he had to answer what his nightmares were about. That was the only question she had to know. There were others, sure, but nothing as interesting as why he was punishing himself.
“Playing an honest game can’t scare you that much, Cadee.”
Playing an honest game? Did he not see the color of her skin? Did he not take in the black Red Demon marks? This was going to be the most dishonest game she was going to play.
Taking her seat, she opened the box and pulled out the cards. Ganne reached out, “It’s my turn to shuffle.”
“Fine.”
The casual air about him remained as he shuffled and dealt the cards. She picked up her cards and gave him a gesture to go first.
“Do you have any threes?”
“Nope,” she said looking at a card with three-stars and another three-planets.
“Flip ‘em.”
She smiled, flipped her cards and Ganne reached over the table, making it creak with his weight, and took the cards out of her hand. He sat back and laid down three cards of threes. With his free hand he took his glass of beer and finished the contents.
“Do you have any nines?” she asked.
His face did that thing that he always did before he had to lie. “No.”
Inwardly her blood danced in celebration for knowing his body better than he did. This was going to be so easy. Poor thing was going to learn the hard way that it was foolish to play cards with her. She was a professional. And she didn’t play the cards, she played the person. It was her genuine specialty.
“Flip ‘em,” she said leaning on her chin with a smile.
He did.
Not a single nine in his hand.
